Woodside Gym Ballymena
Woodside Road Gym nearing completion
Another 2/3 weeks until the Gym opens on the Woodside Road.
An exciting time for The Fitness Factor as they are for taking on this.
The Fitness Factor is one of Northern Ireland’s leading gyms that prides itself on being unique. How? Opening up their 3rd Gym in the Ballymena area just shows how committed they are to their industry & the local community.
Along with ourselves, Studio21 an interior design company based in Dublin have had a large input into how the unit has been fitted out.
This will defiantly be one of the best looking gyms in the local area!!

We’ve been kindly invited to tonight’s Milk Cup tournament (Northern Ireland) final at Ballymena Showgrounds by McKendry Fabrications.

Northern Ireland v Mexico Elite teams at approx 6-00pm!
County Tyrone v Manchester United at approx 8-00pm
All held at Ballymena Showgrounds!!
Best of all tonight is that along with all the young & hopefully future stars….there is a team in each final from Northern Ireland. With any luck there’ll be a sell out crowd and some decent weather
Since the Milk Cup started back in 1983 it has attracted entries from Clubs and Nations all over the world.
Now with it in it’s 30th year, all us locals in Northern Ireland & those that visit for the tournament, have been amazed to see some of the young players “make it big”
In the United team one year was bursting with future stars including Nicky Butt, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Robbie Savage and Ben Thornley as well as our own Colin Murdock and Keith Gillespie.
Eight of the England squad at World Cup finals in South Africa played at Milk Cup –Wayne Rooney (with Everton) Joe Cole (West Ham), Michael Carrick (West Ham), James Milner (Leeds Utd), Aaron Lennon (Leeds), Jermain Defoe (Spurs), Peter Crouch (Spurs), Ledley King (Spurs).
So all in all it’s one of the best youth tournament in the World.

We attended the launch of the Ballymena Borough Business Excellence Awards 2013 hosted by Ballymena Borough Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Ballymena Town Hall – The Braid.
After being finalists in last years ‘Website of the Year’ we are looking at possibly entering another category this year.
We’re also looking forward to a great night out in Ballymena, Tullyglass Hotel

NI councils receive funds to tackle dereliction
Fifteen Northern Ireland councils are to share £1.5m from the Department of Environment (DoE) to tackle decay and dereliction in their areas.
Environment Minister Alex Attwood said the funds would be used to enhance the environment and in turn boost tourism and local trade.
He said the dereliction funding scheme was going from strength to strength.
The money was confirmed by Finance Minister Sammy Wilson two weeks ago as part of the June Monitoring round.
‘Increasing significance’
Mr Attwood said £2m had already been spent in nine council areas, including Belfast.
“Many more can now do so. This is a project of increasing significance,” he said.
“Tourists will be put off by eyesores. If we deal with dereliction, vacant properties and abandoned building sites, we create the opportunity to attract local investment and tourists.”
Mr Attwood said councils that received funding should “press on” while he continued to bid for funds to take the scheme forward.
“This investment is also for the people of the area. They will have the character of their built environment improved,” he said.

Planning approval on Deerfin Road, Ballymena
Ballymena architects receive planning approval at another site in Ballymena
We just received planning approval for a site on the Deerfin Road, Ballymena, County Antrim
After what was initially thought by planning to be a refusal, we manage to get the correct information to prove that they were indeed wrong & that our application should be approved.
This then took 6 months for the approval to come thought!!!!
Usually we’ve approvals in less time, but with some more sensitive application, extra time should be allowed.
Once approval came in we went straight in to Building Control with their application.
I’m now pleased to say our client has at long last got started on site 🙂

Attwood announces easing of planning rules for farmers
Environment Minister Alex Attwood today announced the easing of planning rules for farmers
The new rights, known as permitted development rights, will come in to operation in August 2013. They will increase the range of agricultural development that no longer needs planning permission.
Farmers will now be able to undertake new build or extend agricultural buildings including sheds for hay and straw, storage and maintenance of agricultural machinery and plant, milking parlours, slurry storage tanks and chicken and other livestock sheds without having to go through the planning application process.
This means farmers can construct buildings up to 500 square metres without the need for a planning application (the equivalent of over 5,000 square feet). Currently they can only erect up to 300 square metres without the need for a planning application.
Alex Attwood said: “These new rights, the most generous on these islands, will eliminate unnecessary red tape to enable agriculture to grow in a challenging economic climate. Extensive research has been carried out and I have listened and met with various groups and these changes are warmly welcomed. I want to help expand our agri-food business by 40% in the next few years. That is what producers tell me they hope to achieve – these changes can help the industry to do so.
“These new rights strike an essential balance, they free up farmers to make improvements with safeguards to protect neighbours and ensure that development is of an appropriate scale and character.”
The new rights will also provide for the installation of structures of up to 500 square metres to house anaerobic digestion plant on agricultural units. Put simply, anaerobic digestion is a treatment process using, for example, farm crops and animal waste to produce biogas which can be used as a fuel to power and heat the farm.
Alex Attwood continued: “Renewable energy and technology is our single biggest economic opportunity. This is why I am working hard to get planning better fit for purpose with more renewable approvals. Statistics published this week show an increase of 90% in renewable energy applications with almost nine in ten of these approved. This will help our economy and meet Executive Renewable Energy targets.
“These new rules will help farmers seize the benefits of renewable technologies such as anaerobic digesters which can help to make savings and reduce running costs in the longer term.”
The Minister concluded: “This year I have already paved the way for schools, businesses and farm buildings to install solar panels without planning permission and announced further rights to boost mobile phone and internet coverage in Northern Ireland.
“This is further proof that planning is turning corners. Over the past two years I have driven through changes and set challenging targets to speed up the planning process. Whether it is Article 31/ ministerial decisions, renewable energy decisions or new policies on tourism and heritage, reform is working. Planning is delivering benefits to the economy in an efficient and timely manner whilst protecting our environment. The DOE is leading in protecting the environment and in supporting economic recovery. These new rules further demonstrate this.”

Toome Extension & Renovation
starting extension on site in toome
We’re just about to commence on site with our Extension & Renovation project near Toome.
Our brief was to include extra living space to make use of the existing mature garden to the rear, along with providing extra bedroom and bathroom space.
All this as well as a double garage with office space to the first floor accessible via external steps.
All this was done in accordance with the new building regulations (2012) with extra insulation to help the thermal values.

Ballymena Borough Chamber of Commerce and Industry held a welcome meeting for new members in the Adair Arms last week.
In the last few months Chamber has recruited 14 new members.
Chamber President Thomas McKillen welcomed the new members, saying: “It is great to see so many new members here this morning. New members are the lifeblood of any organisation.
“There is a wealth of experience and knowledge in this Chamber and I hope you find membership to be both enjoyable and beneficial.”
The new members then introduced themselves and Thomas presented them with their membership certificates.
Unfortunately we couldn’t attend due to having site meetings that morning, but Chris Wales from the Chamber came out to our offices on the Woodside Road, to Ballymena architects, Slemish Design Studio us with their certificate.
We’re now listed in the Chamber as Architects & Planning Consultants, so should you need any advice on either, please don’t hesitate to contact our office.

Glarryford house nears completion
New build “dwelling on a farm” nearing completion
This project is for a new house on a great site in Glarryford, Ballymena.
The site for this house is located in Glarryford, Ballymena, gaining planning approval as “a dwelling on a farm” under PPS21
Our client wanted a modern/contemporary feel to the traditional farm house seen throughout Northern Ireland.
The challenge was to deal with the conflicting objectives of getting planning permission while designing a home that made the most of the site and views. The form of the house is a response to the local environment, its orientation, the adjacent family farm , and its prominence in this local area.
