During the post Celtic Tiger slump, many architectural practices either closed or shed large numbers of staff; such was the fate of Steven Bell and Joseph Magill.
A firm belief however, in their ability to provide architectural services people and businesses still wanted, led to their first office – above Steven’s father’s agricultural store.

Not an ideal location, but when times are tight and you are starting out in business then needs must. Two years on though, and the pair, known as Slemish Design Studio, are moving on and up to new premises at the Raceview Mill in Broughshane, Ballymena, Co Antrim.
Raceview Mill is a new development to provide the local area with a centre for arts, enterprise and tourism.

Not that lack of working in a creative environment has held the practice back, quite the opposite as they have completed projects all over Northern Ireland as well as Donegal, Sligo and Cork . Their work covers all aspects and types of architecture both residential and commercial, traditional and modern, using local tradition and materials appropriate for each site, while always ensuring the design and functionality are never diminished. Central to the success of any project, from initial brief through to delivery, is their client, and much of the success of the partnership is due to recognising and listening to the end user.
